"Where Did I Go Wrong and Mess-up My Project?"
Submitted by Hans Lodder on Sat, 07/02/2009 - 17:53Were you ever involved in a project which started brilliantly? And then, all of a sudden, things go out of control? The project breaks down, and control never returns to you. And you ask your self the question: How did I get here, in this situation? And, where did I go wrong?
Your Champion
Perhaps the question you ask yourself should be: What is the most important part I must arrange for when starting a project. Because if the project launching conditions are OK, the rest follows suite.
The answers to this last question is quite simple, and too bad that the implementation is complicated. To be able to launch it good you need the answer to these questions:
- Who is the owner of the project result, because decisions will have to be taken, and enforced.
- Is the result owner also the business process owner we are changing, otherwise we will have 2 captains on our ship.
- Did we communicate ownership and aimed result loudly and clearly, so we are certain that everyone is aware of it.
If you do not have an owner being the empowered decision maker, you cannot enforce actions in troubled situations. You need a champion.
Breaking the Trend
If you have a feeling that the progress is decreasing, or that you encountered a negative spirit or something like that, you need to break that trend. In my opinion the only way to do that is to find the smallest focused action which exactly does this thing: Breaking the trend. And follow it up very closely, and make sure that it demonstrates the advantages on the project result.
Your Ultimate Friend the Decision Matrix
A decision matrix relates process step results to the involved decision makers. Creating it is about as difficult as solving an organization problem. It provides a rough sketch of who can make the decision, and help the project with further progress.
If you are in trouble, it helps you to get clear who is going to help you, and how.
How about your projects? Did you ever ask yourself where you did go wrong? And how? Let us discuss and make the Results2Match Community work for you!
